ORAS Virtual Public Night: “The Sun and Moon: The Mapuche Cosmovision of the Universe”

March 16 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

free

The Mapuche are the largest Indigenous group in South America. For centuries they have placed great importance on observing the universe around them, including the sky. These observations informed their calendar, and the ceremonies they performed at the time of a solar eclipse. The presentation will focus on how the Mapuche came to understand the universe, with a particular focus on the relationship between the Sun and the Moon.

About the presenter: Ms. Yasmin Catricheo is a physics educator and a specialist in preserving and sharing Mapuche Indigenous traditions. She also serves as board secretary of Astronomers without Borders.

To listen in on the presentation, you must register in advance. Please register before noon (EDT) on Saturday, March 16 at https://forms.gle/FfZZEvQMETQvbFsu6. A link will be emailed to you about 4-6 hours before the event begins.
