7:30 PM to 8:30 PM: Education Program: “Recent Discoveries in Archaeoastronomy”
Exploring the astronomical knowledge of past cultures has been at the edges of research in both archaeology and astronomy. However, recent archaeological discoveries in several regions of the world have led to insights into the belief systems of several cultures as related to their understanding of the heavens.
8:30 PM to 11:00 PM – Public Stargazing
About the presenter: Dr. Susan Prezzano is a recently retired professor of anthropology at Clarion (Penn West) University, and a member of ORAS. For 50 years she has specialized in the archaeology east of the Mississippi. She worked on projects in Italy, Antigua, California, and all over the southeast and northeast of North America. Her interest in astronomy started at the age of 14. She began actively observing the heavens after the passage of comet Hale-Bopp rekindled her love of stargazing. Dr. Prezzano uses a 12.5-inch Starmaster telescope to search for deep sky objects, carbon stars, and binaries.
