Look Up: Finding Beauty, Breath, and Belonging in the Everyday

When was the last time you looked up?

Not at your phone. Not at your to-do list. But up…toward the sky. Toward the treetops. Toward the quiet little details that often go unnoticed above eye level.

In the rush of everyday life, it’s easy to keep our heads down…literally. We scroll through feeds, check emails while walking, and fall into the habit of tunnel vision. Half-listening, Half-seeing…You know what I mean. But there’s something special that happens when we pause and take in the world around us. And here’s your reminder to:

See What’s Been Built

In our Venango County communities, we’re extremely lucky to be surrounded by rich history and craftsmanship. Take the time to look at buildings and recognize what is unique about them.

Look up at the ornate brickwork of our downtown buildings. At the roofline’s decorative molding, and chimneys, the steeples, old ironwork, and don’t forget to check the trim above the windows and doors. These architectural details tell stories of generations who dreamed, built, gathered, and shaped the places we live and walk today. Honor their work by looking up and take pride in what’s been built.

Reconnect with Nature

Outside of what humans have built, nature is always showing up for us.

Stop and watch the trees sway gently in the wind. Notice the way light filters through the leaves. Take in the ever-changing clouds drifting across the sky… it’s a show that costs nothing but offers everything. It’s a reminder that we are part of something bigger, something steady and grounding even as the world changes.

Breathe Deeper. Stand Taller.

Here’s another reason to look up. It literally shifts how we move through the world.

Try this right now:
Roll your shoulders back. Open up your chest. Lift your chin.
Take a deep breath in and out.
Feel the tension melt just a little.

This simple act can help undo the effects of “tech neck,” improve posture, and even boost mood and energy. It’s not just a physical adjustment…it’s a mental one, too.

Look Around, Not Just Up

Whether you’re enjoying a concert in the park, cheering from the sidelines at a high school game, standing in line at your favorite coffee shop, or grabbing dinner downtown…take a moment to pause. Not just to look up, but to truly look around.

Notice the smiles, the laughter, the conversations floating through the air. Feel the energy of people coming together, simply by being in the same place. That is the quiet power of community. And just by being there, you’re a part of it… a part of the fabric that creates the sense of community.

Then, take a moment to recognize that nothing happens on its own and look a little deeper:

  • The volunteers who showed up early to set up chairs, hang signs, and keep things running
  • The servers who bring your meal with a kind word and a smile
  • The kitchen staff and cleaning crews working behind the scenes
  • Neighbors pitching in without recognition, simply because they care

Looking up isn’t just about what’s above us, it’s about being present enough to notice the humanity around us. When we take the time to notice, we see that community isn’t just something we live in… it’s something we create, together.

Presence Lives Above the Horizon Line

Looking up reminds us to be here. To step out of our heads and into the moment. To see beauty in our surroundings and gratitude for the ordinary.

So the next time you’re walking around, lift your eyes. Notice the history, the sky, the canopy of trees above. And when you’re surrounded by people, notice them too.

Let it ground you. Let it open you. Let it remind you that this place, and this moment, is worth noticing.

Be Here. Breathe here. Look up.

Because when we truly look up, around, and within we begin to see just how much this community has to offer.
